Publix Partners with York County Habitat to Build Affordable Housing
York County, SC (February 17, 2017) – Publix Super Markets Charities contributed $80,000 to Habitat for Humanity of York County to build an affordable home in partnership with a homebuyer in need of decent and affordable housing. Publix’s associates will partner with Meka and raise the walls of the first of four homes to be built by York County Habitat in 2017. Additionally, the affiliate will complete 40+ home repair projects as well.
“Every family deserves an opportunity to have a roof over their heads and food on their table,” said Carol Jenkins Barnett, President of Publix Super Markets Charities. “My father established our foundation in 1966 with a strong desire to see our communities thrive. Fifty years later, we’re still honoring his legacy. We are delighted to support Habitat for Humanity affiliates across Publix’s footprint by giving $5.5 million to this very important cause.”
As the homebuyer, Meka will work side-by-side with Publix’s associates and other Habitat volunteers to put in some 250 hours of sweat equity. At the home dedication she will receive the keys to her home as well as an affordable mortgage that will not exceed 30% of her income.
Habitat for Humanity's Executive Director, Tim Veeck states, "Habitat seeks to create affordable homeownership options for first time homebuyers". Veeck further stated, "There is a severe lack of affordable housing in York County, a problem we as a community need to address".
Habitat builds strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter with families. We believe everyone deserves a decent and affordable place to call home. Habitat is looking for individuals, businesses, faith groups, civic and social organizations to partner with in meeting the desperate need for decent and affordable housing in York County.
