building change

The traditional new home construction model remains a hallmark of Habitat of York County’s work, but it is only one of many ways the organization impacts the community. Habitat of York County’s work also consists of a variety of housing solutions including our Home Repair program, Home Rehab, Aging In Place and Housing+ services.

safe, reliable housing

New Home Construction

Habitat of York County believes that homeownership is a major key to a family’s safety, health, stability and financial freedom. New homes are sold to Habitat homebuyers with an affordable mortgage; that is, a monthly payment that does not exceed 30% of their income. In exchange, Habitat homebuyers invest hundreds of Sweat Equity hours including homebuyer education and financial literacy training prior to purchasing their new home.

Green Initiatives

Habitat of York County is committed to building and repairing homes in the greenest manner possible, and believes that energy efficiency is a major part of the affordable housing solution. The organization’s green goals are pursued through construction materials and practices, recycling programs, and ongoing research for ways to improve all sustainability efforts. Habitat of York County currently builds to Fortified Homes and EnergyStar standards.

Aging in Place and Housing+

The preservation of self-determination for older adults is essential in maintaining a good quality of life.  Habitat for Humanity of York County works with income qualified older adults to make home improvements that allow them to continue to live in their own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age and ability level.

Home Repair

The need for affordable housing is not only an issue faced by rent-burdened families, but also those on a fixed income living in homes in need of major repairs. Home Repair allows homeowners to remain in their homes and while also preserving the county’s affordable housing stock.

Home Repair addresses critical health, safety, accessibility, structural integrity and energy efficiency concerns in several areas of the home, and qualifications are based on multiple factors, including household income, tax assessment and more.

If you own a home or know a homeowner in need of major home repairs, please call the Critical Home Repair Hotline at 803-328-1728 x3 or services@yorkcountyhabitat.org.

Critical Home Repair

Home Rehab

Occasionally, Habitat of York County’s construction team will purchase (or will have donated) foreclosed, vacant or incomplete homes to fix up and resell to Habitat homebuyers. This element of the affordable housing ministry impacts the community in two ways:

  1. Addresses the need for more affordable housing.
  2. Stabilizes neighborhoods with high-foreclosure and high-vacancy rates that are more vulnerable to crime.
Modifications

Accessibility is vital for the independence and quality of life for people living with disabilities and the elderly.  Habitat for Humanity of York County works with income qualified homeowners — individuals and families — to make home modifications that increase home safety and eliminate barriers to daily living activities.
